Although the summer is *almost* over, don't be fooled: the sun is out year-round. I'm thrilled to be teaming up with the Home Shopping Network today to bring you some of my most important tips on staying safe (and still stylish) in the sun!
TIP 01. SUNSCREEN Growing up in Honolulu, I took both the sun and SPF for granted. I rarely wore sunscreen, and it's pretty hard to escape the sun in Hawaii. It was only when I reached my 20s that I realized how important SPF is for our skin, not just for right now, but for the future. Our skin is the largest and fastest growing organ of our bodies, and we need to consciously take care of it. Wearing sunscreen daily will help prevent not only types of skin cancer, but wrinkles and sun spots (seriously, who wants to look 10 years older?!). I can't stress how important sunscreen is. My favorite being Blue Lizard from Australia - it's great for my sensitive skin and doesn't affect it (other sunscreens make me break out...ugh), and more importantly, it has a very low toxicity level (check out the toxicity level of your sunscreen at EWG). Oh, and don't forget, UV rays still come through on cloudy days, so don't skip the sunscreen!

TIP 02. COVER UP So...you're at the beach. Of course you're going to lay out and get your tan on! But be conscious of how long you're exposed. If you can, remember to bring an umbrella to spend half...if not most of your time under! I love the new trend of kimono's - and they make the perfect stylish beach cover-up! My favorites are white lace crochet and semi-sheer pretty printed ones! A wide-brim hat (always SO cute, too!) does wonders for keeping your face and neck from turning beet red due to overexposure to the sun, and I personally think a cami swimsuit top or a one-piece are super cute and trendy (and it helps to cover up your skin a bit).
TIP 03. GONE SURFING When I'm out in the water surfing, I'll usually be there for a few hours. If you're like me and enjoy surfing or other water/outdoor activities, I recommend these tips: A) Go during sunrise or sunset when the sun is not at it's brightest or strongest; B) Wear a hat to cover your face; C) Wear long sleeves, shirt, or rash guard; and D) Every hour, try to take a break, dry off, and re-apply sunscreen when you can...then get back to having fun!
TIP 04. SHADES Let's not forget those eyes! Sunglasses do more than just make you look uber cool. They help to protect your eyes from harmful UV rays, just as sunscreen protects your skin. Sunglasses help to prevent cataracts, age-related macular degeneration (AMD), eyestrain, and wrinkles around your delicate eyes.
TIP 05. WATERPROOF AND SWEATPROOF Oh summer heat, as much as I love you...but guys, I sweat. And I mean sweat, I 'aint gonna lie. I've yet to find the perfect natural deodorant that does wonders for perspiration in the summer months (I'm totally open to recommendations, friends!)...I would have included that product in this list if I had it! Instead, what I love is a good waterproof mascara that dodges both water (perfect for the beach or pool) AND sweat...much like Benefit's BADgal waterproof mascara.
